The Positives and Negatives of wearing School Uniforms

The positives and negatives of kids wearing school uniforms will always to be a controversial topic. Thousands of schools all over the world are insisting on kids wearing school uniforms. Many believe that there is a clear link between academic performance and wearing a uniform to attend school. The wearing of school uniforms is debated passionately in many parts of the world, but particularly in the U.S.A.Many experts both qualified and self appointed offer good arguments for wearing and not wearing school uniforms and we will examine the points made below. Good Reasons for School Uniforms Many heads of education around the globe experts state that children who turn up to school wearing uniforms achieve better academic results in class. In school environments where children can wear whatever they like, sometimes the clothes are a distraction. Clothes can even be a point of focus and be criticised or praised by other children. Many educational experts suggest that a standardised uniform rule eliminates distractions and enhances student concentration. The Experts arguing the case for uniforms suggest that more serious tone within the school environment that is conducive to learning and can improve student performance. They also believe that wearing uniforms gives children the correct mindset for discipline and order. At a young age putting time in to thinking about what clothes to wear to school each day is wasting energy that could be used as study time.  Respectful Behaviour Students who wear uniforms tend to understand that the dress rule is just one of many behaviour codes they will be expected to follow. If all children are dressed in a fairly identical way it eliminates the opportunity to make fun of someone's dress or fashion sense. Bullying and elitism are less likely to occur. Even though most students in a particular area will be from a similar demographic background, some kids will wear more modern and trendier clothes then others if there are no uniform rules. When children are feeling self conscious about what they are wearing they will often be a target for bullying and potentially find it harder to concentrate on their school work. If a child is from a family with money concerns it will reflect in both the brands and the style of clothes that they are wearing. Experts suggest that these social pressures and the desire to fit in can affect not only the child's ability to learn and their confidence levels as they mature. Expensive Clothing We have all heard stories of kids coming home and saying that a friend has the latest electronic game or shoes and that they would like the same brand. This naturally causes parents to spend more than they can afford and can even contribute to increased credit card debt levels. The argument the experts put forward says that uniforms are inexpensive, but in some schools uniforms can cost hundreds of dollars each year. School Uniforms Are BadSome educators arguing to stop school uniforms suggest that children have their personal self expression stifled when they are made to wear school uniforms. Some point out that in children are made to dress exactly the same way they will search for improper ways to be individuals. Boys will sometimes take to wearing earrings in high school and girls will wear overly colourful makeup and strange things in their hair. Society At Large Some experts maintain that children made to wear school uniforms will not be prepared for the big bad world when they attend university or join the workforce and preparing early for personal choice is crucial. You Can Only Wear Uniforms One PlaceAnother argument against school uniforms is that you can only wear them at school. Although buying trendy clothes for children to wear to school can be expensive at least they can be worn at home and socially. This argument does carry some weight when though through.  It is All about Control not RespectExperts that are against school uniform suggest that educators for school uniform want their students to respect and fear them because of rules and uniformity. These experts would also suggest that teachers and educators should possess the ability to earn a student's respect by teaching and instructing rather than dominating. In closing I believe this is an argument that will continue on for many decades and in fairness properly a blend of more mufti or uniform free days may be the anwser. This would encourage student individuality but also maintain a code of uniformity and respect.
