Developmental Programs in Society

Developmental programs have been in existence since the 1800's and are important for our young people. There are early childhood developmental programs and there are developmental programs designed for high school students. The early childhood programs start at around 3 months and go until the child is ready for kindergarten. The other is designed for older students who are usually between the ages of 14 to 18.Some benefits of early childhood developmental programs are students who are more likely to do better in high school and go onto college. They are involved in less crime and have the potential to earn more than kids who were not involved in early developmental programs. It is also less expensive to start developmental programs early when the brain is still forming rather than later in life when retention is not as good. The developmental programs that are designed for the older student are there to help those students who are not academically prepared for college. By taking these developmental programs either in high school or as a freshman in college the student will become a better student and be able to complete college level classes. The goal of these developmental programs is for students to have the opportunity to go to college and make a better life for themselves. There are different schools of thought about the effectiveness of developmental programs. Some feel that everyone should have the same advantages in getting into colleges regardless of age, race or social economic status. Others feel that it is a waste of money to fund these programs. Many institutions must decide if the developmental programs are effective in keeping students from dropping out and to make sure they are able to participate in college courses. The early childhood developmental programs have proven that the child's social, cognitive and emotional development was enhanced and they were better prepared for kindergarten. No matter when these developmental programs take place for the child, it does improve their future. They gain life long study skills and build self-confidence. Of course, earlier developmental programs are better in the long run especially for low-income and at-risk children. Everyone should have the same opportunities in education and these programs are vital to the strength of our society as a whole. It's better for the individual and better for the community.
